An old German proverb – “Handwerk hat gold­ enen Boden” – suggests that learning a trade will pave your way with gold. As with most adages, though, reality is not quite that straight­ forward. For three generations now, plumbing company Schleiss has been showing how its combination of expertise and friendly advice is the way to succeed in Engelberg’s compact market – even though there are several competi­ tors. “There’s enough work for ever yone,” says Roman Sch leiss (51), a qua lif ied plumber who

Anikò, a mother of two who comes f rom Hungar y, appears to have a keen sense of what her clients might like: “Ever y customer is dif ferent, they a ll want dif fer- ent things” – and it is this variety that makes her enjoy her job so much. Roman is ver y keen to he gets to replace old heaters and household de- v ices with energy-ef f icient a lternatives. Ever y step counts, he says, no mat ter how sma ll. Roman is happy with the way things are going. As a classic Swiss SME with eight em- ployees, Sch leiss can’ t hand le huge volumes, but its books are usua lly f u ll. This success is largely down to the team of long-standing employees, of whom Roman is clearly ver y proud. “It wou ld be great if we cou ld a lso take on an apprentice in the coming year,” he says. That makes sense, as a company whose employ- ees see their job as their vocation is in an idea l position to train good tradesmen and women. Sch leiss’ commitment to helping young people is a lso clear in the company’s sponsor- ship ac tiv ities. It lends f inancia l suppor t to clubs – in par ticu lar Spor tclub Engelberg – that foster the nex t generation. Roman believes that ac tive clubs are par t of the overa ll pack- age that makes Engelberg so at trac tive. encourage customers to star t switching f rom heating sys- tems that use oil to ones that work with renewable ener- gies. became managing direc- tor of Sch leiss in 2005. His grandfather, Eduard Sch leiss, founded the company in 1928. Back then, it focused exclusively on plumbing insta llations, but when Ro-

man’s father Robi took over in 1965, he had a pioneering idea: Sch leiss wou ld add a second string to its bow and become a reliable par t- ner for heating as well as plumbing. Today, plumbing work accounts for 60 percent of the company’s business, while an impressive 40 percent comes f rom heating insta llations and maintenance. “Building ser v ices are a lways inter twined,” says Roman of the advantages of hand ling both plumbing and heating. He ex- plains that architec ts, in par ticu lar, appreciate hav ing just one contac t person for planning and insta lling plumbing and heating systems. Sch leiss doesn’ t conf ine itself to new builds: renovations and conversions have long been par t of its ser v ices, and the company a lso hand les the construc- tion management for these projec ts on request. When it comes to planning new bathrooms, Roman draws on the exper tise of his wife Anikò, who steps in to create v ir- tua l images of customers’ dream designs.
