Die Freilichtbühne entsteht im Gebiet zwischen dem Re- staurant Wasserfall und der Talstation der Fürenalpbahn. The open-air stage is being erected in an area between the Wasserfall restaurant and the valley station of the Fürenalpbahn cableway.

The timeless Western stories of German author Karl May have fascinated readers of all ages across the world for almost 150 years. This year marks May’s 175th birthday, and to celebrate we are bringing the adventures of his most famous protagonists, Winnetou and Old Shatterhand, to Switzerland in a live outdoor show. Engelberg of- fers a fantastic setting for the Western spectacu- lar “Winnetou 1”. The show’s direc tor is long-established German TV, f ilm and theatre ac tor Giso Weiss- bach. Winnetou is played by Tom Volkers, who has a lready por trayed the show’s eponymous hero on four dif ferent stages. Riding by his side as Old Shat terhand is Christoph Kot- tenkamp. Viewers will recognise Christoph f rom the theatre, cinema, and par ticu larly the telev ision. In recent years, this diverse ac tor f rom the German state of Hesse has featured in numerous German-language series. In Switzerland he is probably best known for his

stories about blood broth- ers Winnetou and Old Shat- terhand have long since become a literar y monument. In the 1960s, they gained iconic status thanks to the popu lar mov ies starring

L ive show “Win- netou 1” depic ts the origins of the incredible f riendship between Winnetou, the son of an Apache chief, and Old Shat terhand, a German railway engineer. This open-air spec tacu lar for a ll the family features plenty of ac tion, romance and thrills, but a lso inspires audi- ences to ponder upon our world and our va lues. Thanks to its positive working relation- ship with the publisher of May’s works, the produc tion crew was able to obtain the neces- sar y per forming rights for Switzerland. And the location that the crew chose for this exclu- sive Swiss premiere of the open-air show Win- netou 1 cou ldn’ t be bet ter: Engelberg’s natura l landscape prov ides a scenic backdrop of mag- nif icent mountains and a cascading water fa ll. The outdoor stage is situated between the Was- ser fa ll restaurant and the va lley station of the Fürena lpbahn cableway. For the per formance, the site will be enhanced with an ar tif icia l creek, a pueblo, and Western-style façades.

Twenty-si x per formances of the show are planned f rom 15 Ju ly to 13 August 2017, with nine taking place in the af ter- noon and 17 in the evening. Tickets can be purchased f rom Ticketcorner, post of f ices, Coop City, Manor and Jelmoli, and at a ll SBB (Swiss federa l railways) counters. The cov- ered grandstands seat 2,000 spec tators.
