SUMMER

VARIED TERRAIN These days, Patric is an expert who knows all about maintaining, fixing and choosing bikes. He now works at Go-In Sport in Engelberg. Cus- tomers can immediately sense his passion for mountain biking and are able to benefit from his vast store of knowledge. There is only one thing he likes more than his work in the shop, and that’s going biking himself. He usually gets out three days a week. But he no longer focuses on downhill mountain biking like he did in Lenzerheide. “Of course, the descents take priority,” says Pat, with shining eyes, “but riding uphill is part of it too.” Pat came to Engelberg because of his girlfriend, but he also quickly fell in love with the natural landscape and the numerous bike trails. He likes to try out new routes and probably knows more about the trails here than many born-and-bred locals. He doesn’t have a favourite trail – instead, he loves the variety. After work or in his lunch hour he mainly goes to the Brunni area, where the uphill journey isn’t too difficult. And with every stroke of the pedal, his anticipation grows for the descent. And that’s what makes Pat really happy: having fun on the trails, getting into the flow, es- caping the hustle and bustle, feeling the adrena- lin in his veins, pushing his body – all surrounded by beautiful nature, right on his doorstep. When Pat wants to really go for it, he heads for the Trudy Trail, which starts at the Joch Pass, along with two other bike trails. On his days off he takes longer tours, heading for the cantons of Uri, Bern or Nidwalden over varied terrain, some of which can be very challenging. He then re- turns home nice and easy on public transport.

Patrick Bernhard A ready smile and keen to lend a hand. Talk about biking with him and the smile gets even wider. Kind-hearted Pat is always good for a laugh – maybe we should all get on our bikes as often as he does.
