Im Gelände gibt der Pendeltest (mit zwei gleich langen Skistöcken) ganz leicht Aufschluss über die Hangsteilheit. Hierbei wird ein Skistock hangabwärts in den Schnee gelegt und ohne die Lage der Stockspitze zu verändern, wieder aufgestellt. Der zweite Stock wird an den ersten Stock gehalten und dient als Pendel: -Trifft der pendelnde Stock unterhalb des Schneeabdruckes auf die Schneeoberfläche, ist der Hang steiler als 30° -Jede Grifflänge, um die die Stockspitze unterhalb des Schneeabdruckes auftritt, ist der Hang 3° steiler. -Trifft der Stock in die Markierung, ist der Hang flacher als 30° Hangneigungsklassen Mässig steil: Hänge flacher als rund 30° Sehr steile Hänge: Hänge steiler als 35° Steilhänge: Hänge steiler als rund 30° Extrem steile Hänge: Besonders ungünstig bezüglich Neigung (> 40°), Geländeform, Kammnähe The ski pole test (using ski poles of the same length) is an easy way to estimate the gradient of a slope during a tour. A ski pole is dropped downhill by the grip in the snow and then picked up again with the tip of the pole not being moved. The second pole is held out with the grip against the grip of the first pole, serving as a pendulum: -If the tip of the pendulum pole touches the surface of the snow below the imprint made by the first pole, the slope is steeper than 30°. -Each 10 cm (=1 handle lenght) that the pendulum pole tip lies further downhill than the first pole imprint is equivalent to an additional 3° of slope steepness. -If the pole tip touches the surface within the first pole imprint, the slope is less than 30°. Slope Angle Classifications Moderately steep terrain: slopes flatter than about 30° very steep slopes: slopes steeper than 35° Steep slopes: slopes with an angle of more than about 30° extreme slopes: steeper than 40° and slopes that are inherently dangerous due to terrain profile or close proximity to ridges.
