Engelberger Silvia Hurschler Bieri has at least two great passions: the mountains and handi- crafts. Her love of nature has now brought her to the Spannort lodge, which she has been running with her husband since late 2013. Thanks to her dexterity and restless creativity, she also sells belts and bags made from old bicycle tyres as well as colourful scarves, hats and headbands all over Switzerland. The Spannor t possesses a magica l charm for Silv ia. Over the years, she and her family have been drawn back to the lodge time and

signed a two-year contrac t with the Uto sec- tion of the SAC. From Monday to Friday, Silv ia keeps the lodge in order while Mar tin works as a greenskeeper at Engelberg’s golf course. At the weekend he main ly helps his wife out at the lodge. Silv ia can a lso rely on the sup- por t of her four daughters, who are “slowly fa lling back in love with the Spannor t lodge”. There is a lways lots to be done at the lodge, perched 1,956 metres above sea level in unique, wild surroundings at the foot of the Sch lossberg, not far f rom Gross and K lein

The couple’s profound relation- ship with the lodge and its natura l surround- ings, a long with their welcoming nature, conv inced Marianne and Thomas that they were per fec tly suited to successf u lly running the lodge, which belongs to the Zurich-based Uto sec tion of the Swiss A lpine Club (SAC). Of course, Silv ia and Mar tin had to do a fair amount of thinking before deciding to take on this responsibility. They weighed up the pros and cons, and came to the conclusion that it was now or never! They had a lways told each other that they wou ld like to run a mountain hut or a youth hostel. And so they

The peace up there is unpara lleled; there is lit tle else but the rushing of streams, the magnif icent v iew of the Titlis and surrounding mountains, and Silv ia’s simple but delicious cooking. “A lthough we just have just a sma ll, basic kitchen, we ser ve varied and f resh mea ls. Guests at the Spannor t lodge can look forward to f resh bread and homemade jam for break- fast. During the day I treat guests to f resh, wholesome soup and specia l Spätzli dishes – and there are cakes and f lans too, of course. For supper in the evening I aim to prepare dishes that use a lot of f resh produce.” A lthough they do not possess the licence required in
