Music has achieved its ultimate goal when it touches a person’s soul. With erstKlassik am Sarnersee, entrepreneur Claus Hipp started a chamber music festival that is in a class of its own. The idea behind the festival is to offer chamber music of the highest quality in beauti- ful settings in the picturesque canton of Obwal- den. And in 2014, this masterpiece of musical prowess is also coming to Engelberg. The distinguished reputation of the erst- K lassik am Sarnersee chamber music festiva l is largely down to the par ticipation of solo-

But the festiva l not on ly of fers a space where musicians and their audience can come together to converse; it is an event where musica l boundaries are transcended and new forms of expression are found. Two years ago, this origina l approach resu lted in a wonder- f u l union between classica l and folk music. Initia lly there were some concerns about the idea, but when the soloists f rom the Radio Symphony Orchestra began to play with Swiss musician Dani Häusler and his Hujässler band, it soon became clear that they had found a

president of the festiva l ’s society, which was founded in 2008 as the organisationa l body. So is it sheer luck that the festiva l features such an outstanding line-up of musicians? Not entirely. It is a lso down to entrepreneur and Obwa lden resident Claus Hipp and Swiss musi- cian Marie-L ise Schüpbach. Fate took a hand when Claus took up oboe lessons with Marie- L ise, who has been a member of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra for 35 years. The resu lt of the collaboration was a festiva l that, this year, will delight an audience of nationa l and internationa l music lovers for the seventh time. “We have v isitors who have at tended many other chamber music festiva ls both in Switzerland and abroad,” says Carlo, “and they have told us that they have never experi- enced any thing quite like our erstK lassik am Sarnersee.” One par ticu larly specia l aspec t of the Obwa lden chamber music festiva l is that, following the concer ts, the musicians come out and mingle with the audience.

k lezmer and Hungarian folk music. For this par ticu lar par t of the programme, the musi- cians will be joined by two masters of the genre – Mátyáz Németh and Philip Weberndör- fer. For the f irst time, this year the festiva l will take place in Engelberg Abbey – on the initiative of the Abbey itself. “For centuries, Engelberg Abbey has been ac tively commit- ted to promoting church music,” says Engel- berg’s Abbot Christian Meyer. “Because of its inherent love of music, the Abbey is ver y eager to help organise high-qua lity concer ts. A chamber music festiva l is a wonder f u l way to promote the Abbey as a venue, and we are ver y much looking forward to the f irst concer t.” The premiere of erstK lassik am Sarn- ersee takes place in Engelberg on Friday 29 August at 8 p.m. in the Abbey’s Baroque Ha ll. For the festiva l ’s opening concer t, the musicians will show of f the f ine ar t of quar tet play ing with pieces by Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven.
