Abt Christian Meyer freut sich, dass das Kloster Engelberg zum Jubiläum 900 Jahre Klos- ter Engelberg den Gästen den eigenen Wein auftischen kann. Abbot Christian Meyer is very happy that Engelberg Abbey will be able to serve its very own wine to guests on its 900th anniversary.

Cu ltivation of the a lmost three-hec tare v ineyard is to be overseen by loca l v intner Beat Burkhardt. The Abbey has leased 1.8 hec tares of the site to Beat for his own use, and he will make wine for the Abbey f rom the grapes in the remaining area. Beat is clearly the right man for the job – in September 2017 the Can- ton of Bern’s Depar tment of Economic Af fairs named him “Bernese Vintner of the Year”. The competition was tough, but in the end Beat ’s Chasselas impressed the jur y more than any of the other 115 wines f rom 22 dif ferent pro-

bey. Produc tion will be increased to 8,000 bot tles in time for the Abbey’s 900th an- niversar y in 2020: “We want to ensure that we have plenty of wine to ser ve our guests at our jubilee celebrations as well as to sup- ply Engelberg restaurateurs and f riends of the Abbey,” says Abbot Christian. It is the intention of both Abbot Chris- tian and v intner Beat to focus on qua lity over quantity in order to accentuate the unique charac teristics of each grape variety. And Beat af f irms that he will apply the same consistent- ly high standards to the cu ltivation of Engel- berg Abbey wine as he does to his own wine. In June 2018, Beat will present an initia l sample. Then, on 24 June, Engelberg Abbey’s f irst ver y own wine will be transpor ted f rom Lake Biel to Engelberg. The handover will be a specia l occasion, organised by the Ehrenwer ten Trüel- erzunf t zu Twann (The honourable v intners’ guild of Twann), which is commit ted to uphold- ing long-cherished traditions of v iticu lture. This year, around 1,500 bot tles of the wine har vested in 2017 will f ind their way into the wine cellar of the Benedic tine Ab-

cu ltura l traditions. Now the Abbey is once again adding winemaking to its reper toire.
