– Engelberg claims to offer guaranteed snow and calls itself a freeriding paradise. Are we right to do so?

Gian: Yes. Precipitation maps fromMeteoSwiss show that Engelberg is one of the snowiest regions. Our area has good topography, with strong orographic lift that creates clouds. Engelberg gets the most precip- itation when air currents are coming from the west and particularly the northwest – and those are the two most common wind directions in Switzerland. The northwest currents come across the North Sea, from the direction of Britain, bringing more moisture and colder air than direct westerly currents. So that’s the best combination for plenty of snow in Engelberg and the northern slopes of the Alps in general. Gian: When there is a big dumping of fresh snow, that always increases the avalanche risk. Often wind comes along with the snow, and those are the two main ingredients for a dangerous avalanche situa- tion. If there is regular heavy snowfall, that doesn’t necessarily mean the winter will automatically be a dangerous one with lots of avalanches. Heavy snow- fall is actually riskiest early in the season. Later in the season, large quantities of snow settle better, cover­ ing weaker layers with a heavy blanket. The large amounts of snow in Engelberg have another positive effect. It means that glacier crevasses are covered up. However, you should never underestimate the risk of falling into crevasses. – Lots of snow brings plenty of risk – and that’s where you come in.

– Was ist denn genau eure Aufgabe in Sachen Sicherheit und wo fängt die Eigenverantwortung des Wintersportlers an?

Gian: Das ist eine sehr gute Frage. Der Pisten- und Rettungsdienst muss einen sicheren Schneesport- betrieb auf den geöffneten Abfahrten garantieren – sprich, dass beispielsweise keine Lawine in die geöffnete Piste vorstösst. Sobald man die beidseits markierten Pisten aber verlässt, gilt die Eigenverant- wortung. Zudem unterstehen wir einer Informations- pflicht, welche von uns erfordert, dass wir ab Lawinen­ stufe 3/erheblich Warntafeln mit der Aufschrift «Lawinengefahr im freien Gelände» aufstellen und Warnleuchten an den Stationen in Betrieb nehmen. Gian: Ja. Die Niederschlagskarte von Meteo Schweiz zeigt, dass Engelberg zu Recht als eine der schnee- reichsten Regionen beworben wird. Unser Tal hat einen guten Winkel und erzeugt einen Staueffekt. Bei West- und insbesondere Nordwestströmungen gibt es in Engelberg ammeisten Niederschlag – und das sind die zwei häufigsten Windrichtungen in der Schweiz. Nordwestströmungen kommen eher von der Nordsee, von England her. Sie bringen viel Feuchtigkeit und kältere Luft als die reine Westströmung, weshalb sie die beste Kombination für ergiebige Niederschläge in Engelberg und allgemein am Alpennordhang sind. – Engelberg steht für Schneesicherheit und bezeichnet sich als Freeridemekka. Dürfen wir das mit gutemGewissen tun?

ImMärz liegen auf dem Titlis (3000 m.ü.M.) durchschnittlich über 350 Zentimeter Schnee. Maximal waren es schon über 800 Zentimeter.
