– Viel Schneefall birgt auch Risiken. Und da kommt ihr zum Einsatz.

– Have you been in weather situations that made you nervous?

Gian: Viel Neuschnee führt kurzfristig immer zu einem Anstieg der Lawinengefahr. Oft kommt in Kombination mit dem Schnee auch der Wind. Und das sind die beiden wichtigsten Zutaten für eine gefähr- liche Lawinensituation. Wenn es regelmässig viel schneit, gibt es aber nicht automatisch einen gefähr- lichen Lawinenwinter. Viel Schnee ist insbesondere am Anfang gefährlich. Aber, grosse Schneemassen können sich auch gut setzen und schwächere Schich- ten tief in der Schneedecke begraben. Viel Schnee hat in Engelberg noch einen weiteren positiven Effekt: Es bedeutet, dass die Gletscherspalten relativ gut gedeckt sind. Jedoch darf die Gefahr von Gletscher- spaltenstürzen nie unterschätzt werden.

Christoph: After 30 years there’s not much that can still make me nervous. Of course, it’s a tricky situation when there’s been lots of fresh snow overnight and then the weather is gorgeous the next day and lots of people want to go up the mountain. If we haven’t been able to finish our work getting the slopes safe, that’s a very stressful situation. It can take a while to ensure everything is safe after a big snowstorm, and we have to complete our work – even if that means visitors are waiting impatiently down in the valley. That can give us sleepless nights – in the true sense of the word. But I should point out that the stress doesn’t come from our bosses – it’s our own sense of pride and loyalty to our visitors: we want to be able to offer them a wonder­ ful day on the slopes at all times. I hope we are able to continue to do so in the future.
