Die Liebe führte ihn nach Engelberg. Geblieben ist er aber nicht nur ihretwegen, sondern auch wegen des Bikeangebots. Denn bei Patric «Pat» Bernhard dreht sich vieles um die Leidenschaft auf zwei Rädern.

Aufgewachsen ist Patric Bernhard in Basel. Auf den ersten Blick nicht gerade die besten Voraussetzungen, um ein passionierter Biker zu werden. Doch Pats Vater ist Bündner. Die ganze Familie ver- brachte viel Zeit in der Lenzerheide. Die Liebe zu den Bergen fliesst bei Pat sozu- sagen im Blut. Auch Velo gefahren sei er schon immer gerne, erzählt der gelernte Metallbauschlosser. «Halt so, wie man es früher gemacht hat», lacht er. Nach der Lehre zog es ihn schon bald weg aus dem Unterland. Zuerst ins Engadin, dann in die Lenzerheide. Dort fand er den Zugang zur lokalen Bikerszene. Er avancierte im Sportgeschäft, für das er arbeitete, zum Bikemechaniker. Nach der Arbeit oder sogar während der Mittagspause war er im Bikepark anzutreffen.

Patric Bernhard grew up in Basel – which might not seem like the best place to develop a fondness for mountain biking. But Pat’s father is from the canton of Grisons, so Pat had a passion for the mountains in his blood. Also, the family used to holiday in Lenzerheide. And Pat always liked cycling, even just on city streets. After completing his apprenticeship as a metalworker, he moved away from the lowlands – initially to the Enga- dine, then to Lenzerheide. And that’s where he got into the mountain-biking scene. He became a bike mechanic at a sport shop, and after work he could be found trying out moves at the bike park – or even during his lunch hour.
