In prehistoric times Engelberg looked quite different! The high-mountain valley you see today was shaped by the glacier advancing and retreating – and by a dramatic landslide. But unlike in Arth-Goldau by Lake Zug, site of an historic landslide in 1806, traces of Engelberg’s landslide only become apparent during major excavations in the village.

Engelberg hat einmal ganz anders ausgesehen. Vorstösse und Rückzüge der Gletscher sowie ein prähistorischer Bergsturz haben das heutige Hochtal massgeblich mitgestaltet. Anders als in Arth Goldau beim Zugersee, findet man in Engelberg die Spuren von diesem Ereignis jedoch erst bei Tiefbauarbeiten im Dorfkern. LLEN
