AN ENGELBERG Mountain adventures, tranquillity, and fun for all the family right here on our doorstep!

People who live in a holiday destination like Engelberg sometimes forget how lucky they are to be able to experience all kinds of mountain adventures without having to drive a single kilometre. This year, a family hike to the Rugghubel SAC mountain hut was on our to-do list. The hut, 2,296 metres above sea level and only four kilometres from Engelberg as the crow flies, is a place we used to go to almost every year – usually a single-day hike up to the hut then back down again. On other occasions it was a stop-off point on a hike to the Rotstock (2,818 metres a.s.l.) or the finish line on a trail run. But this year’s trip to the Rugghubel was very different as our two children, aged four and six, were keen to come along on the hike too – and were particularly excited about spending a night in the cosy mountain hut.

So, one sunny day in August we set out with another family, taking the cable car from the valley floor up to Ristis and then the Brunni chairlift to the Brunni mountain hut. That allowed us to cover around 850 metres of ascent quickly and easily. According to the walking guide, the hike to the Rugghubel hut should take two hours.
